Since the 2nd and 3rd Grade classroom in a combination (both grades in one room), it becomes necessary to combine the instruction for both grades in the curriculum areas of health, science, and social studies. Students are instructed in their respective grade levels for religion, math, reading and all language arts (phonics, spelling, grammar, and creative writing), and handwriting.
I took both the 2nd and 3rd grade subjects that I teach to the whole class and divided them up into even and odd years. Each year I teach the subjects but different topics for the school year beginning with an odd or even year.
During the 'Even Years' I cover the following topics:
- Health: emotions; caring for others; keeping you healthy; good / bad habits
- Science: plants; animal identification and classification; classifying living / non-living things; habitats
- Social Studies: maps; how people live together; rules cause / effect; cultural impact; economics
During the 'Odd Years' I cover the following topics:
- Health: safety; substances that hurt; kinds / causes of environmental pollution; diseases
- Science: think / talk about science; instruments; earth; weather; sound; light; force
- Social Studies: maps; past, present and future; interactions between natural characteristics and human activity; holidays and heroes
