The early settlement of Beaver developed next to the Kawkawlin River because the river offered a means of transportation. Prior to 1888, there were very few roads. The Kawkawlin River was also a source of food by fishing and trapping. The first settlers in Beaver had to clear all the land, cutting the trees, then either floating them or hauling them to nearby sawmills. The lumber was then used to build the early homesteads and farms. After the area was cleared of its timber, the early settlers then turned to farming to earn a living. Beaver flourished because Polish families migrated to the area and built St. Valentine Church and School. |
